Head of ESG – Mining Operations

About the role

The Head of ESG will steer the development and execution of the ESG strategy for a leading copper and cobalt mining operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Reporting to senior leadership, this expatriate role will ensure compliance with international ESG standards and align the business with lender expectations.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and drive the long‑term ESG strategy across all operating sites.
• Own the IFC Performance Standards (PS1‑PS8) compliance roadmap and its implementation.
• Lead the Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP), managing budgets, milestones and evidence collection.
• Engage with international lenders, technical advisors and independent monitors, translating requirements into actionable plans.
• Build and manage an internal ESG team and a network of specialist consultants.
• Serve as subject‑matter expert on IFC Standards, Equator Principles, OECD Guidance and UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
• Prepare and submit ESIA, ESHIA and related environmental and social management plans for regulatory approval.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level experience in ESG, sustainability or CSR within the mining sector.
• Deep knowledge of IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles and related international frameworks.
• Strong track record of managing ESG engagements with lenders and external auditors.
• Experience building internal ESG capabilities and leading multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Expertise in IFC Performance Standards (PS1‑PS8).
• Familiarity with Equator Principles and OECD Due Diligence Guidance.
• Understanding of UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
• Ability to develop and implement ESIA and ESHIA documentation.
