Director of Okapi Wildlife Reserve (DRC)

About the role

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is seeking a highly experienced leader to serve as Director of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve (OWR) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Based permanently at the OWR headquarters in Epulu, the Director will guide the Reserve Management Unit (RMU) through the next phase of its 10‑year management agreement with the Institut Congolaise pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN).

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for all reserve activities, including ranger deployment, wildlife protection, and anti‑poaching efforts.
• Oversee community liaison, research programs, tourism development, fundraising, communications, monitoring & evaluation, and capacity building of national staff.
• Manage a large staff of approximately 300 employees across six departments and ensure efficient day‑to‑day operations.
• Maintain strong relationships with government partners, state enforcement agencies, and other stakeholder organizations.
• Administer a significant budget, ensuring financial accountability and compliance with reporting requirements.

• Extensive experience in managing large, complex conservation projects in challenging environments.
• Demonstrated leadership, diplomatic, and communication skills.
• Proven ability to work safely and effectively in insecure areas.
• Track record of successful fundraising, partnership development, and staff capacity building.
