Head of Department - Health Safety & Environment

About the role

The Head of Department – Health Safety & Environment will lead the development and execution of the HSE strategy for KCC SA’s copper and cobalt mining operations. Reporting to the Managing Director, the role ensures compliance, risk governance and a strong safety culture across the site.

Key responsibilities

• Define, deploy and monitor the site HSE strategy aligned with Group standards, including biodiversity, water management, emissions and decarbonisation.
• Establish a robust material risk management system using HAZOP, ICAM and other methodologies to identify major hazards and critical controls.
• Ensure compliance with national legislation and international standards (ICMM, IFC, Copper Mark) through audits, inspections and continuous procedural updates.
• Promote visible safety leadership, supervise high‑risk activities, and drive incident management, investigations and corrective actions.
• Develop emergency preparedness plans, test response capabilities and coordinate crisis management.
• Support operational leaders by integrating HSE systems into daily work, coaching, training and promoting workplace well‑being.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Health, Safety & Environment, Risk Management or a related field.
• 10‑15 years of HSE leadership experience, with at least 7 years in mining and mineral processing.
• Proven track record in major risk management, underground mining, emergency management and health services.

Required skills

• HAZOP analysis and ICAM investigation expertise.
• Major risk management and critical‑control design.
• Use of leading indicators and digital HSE data platforms.
• Audit planning, execution and regulatory compliance management.
• Emergency response coordination and crisis management.
