Senior Overhead Lines Design Engineer

About the role

WSP is looking for a Senior Overhead Lines Design Engineer to lead tower spotting and line profiling activities on high‑voltage transmission projects. You will work on 132 kV to 765 kV designs, ensuring compliance with Eskom guidelines, SANS 10280, BS EN 50341 and other international standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead tower spotting and line profiling using the PLS‑Suite (PLS‑CADD, POLE).
• Define optimal tower locations considering clearances, spans, conductor sag, terrain and servitude constraints.
• Prepare and approve line profiles, stringing charts and plan‑and‑profile drawings.
• Integrate survey data, LiDAR/DEM and topographical models into design workflows.
• Evaluate alternative routes and tower configurations for cost, constructability and environmental impact.
• Mentor junior engineers and review their PLS‑CADD outputs.
• Present design methodology and compliance studies to clients and multidisciplinary teams.

Required profile

• Senior‑level experience in overhead line (OHL) design, preferably on 132 kV–765 kV projects.
• Proven ability to manage projects independently, both locally and internationally.
• Strong understanding of clearance rules, safety codes and relevant design standards.

Required skills

• PLS‑CADD (PLS‑Suite) proficiency.
• LiDAR and DEM data integration.
• Topographical modelling and terrain analysis.
• Tower spotting and line profiling techniques.
• Knowledge of Eskom guidelines, SANS 10280 and BS EN 50341.
