Community Engagement Associate – Lukula, Kongo Central

About the role

GiveDirectly is recruiting a Community Engagement Associate for its program in Lukula, Kongo Central, Democratic Republic of Congo. The role supports outreach and awareness campaigns for the project among urban, diverse populations, and works closely with community leaders and local actors to build understanding and participation.

Key responsibilities

• Support the distribution of information materials and run awareness campaigns adapted to an urban, mixed audience.
• Work with community leaders, local organisations and community members to improve understanding of the census and encourage participation.
• Organise and lead neighbourhood and street-level community meetings with local leaders.
• Identify potential operational, social, security and perception risks before census and mobilisation activities begin.
• Update community engagement tracking tools with field results and support the Community Engagement and Communications Lead in developing the strategy.
• Maintain regular contact with communities through field visits and handle beneficiary feedback and complaints.
• Help identify and resolve programme FAQs and conduct beneficiary interviews.

Required profile

• Degree in a relevant field such as social sciences, public health, communication, psychology or development.
• Experience in health, psychology and/or protection is desired; training in psychology, protection, nutrition or maternal health is an advantage.
• Proven experience in community engagement, awareness-raising, social mobilisation or communication.
• Strong communication skills and ability to adapt messages to diverse urban audiences, and strong relationship-building skills with community leaders and local authorities.
• Ability to work independently and proactively in complex, densely populated urban settings.
• Good knowledge of community dynamics and local actors in Kongo Central.

Required skills

• Intermediate proficiency in Google Docs, MS Word and MS Excel.
• Use of virtual communication tools such as Google Meet.
• Knowledge of local channels such as community meetings, local radio, social media and WhatsApp is an advantage.
