Consultant for ESG research in DRC copper and cobalt mining

About the role

The International Institute for Sustainable Development seeks a consultant to research and draft a chapter on ESG practices in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s copper and cobalt mining and processing sector. The work combines stakeholder interviews, field visits, and desk research to produce evidence‑based recommendations.

Key responsibilities

• Analyze DRC mining legal and regulatory texts related to ESG requirements.
• Conduct virtual and in‑person stakeholder interviews with government agencies, industry representatives, mining companies, and civil‑society groups.
• Perform fieldwork such as mine‑site visits and community visits to gather primary data.
• Prepare an inception note, detailed chapter outline, interview summary report, first draft and final draft of the chapter (≈2,000 words) with APA 7 citations.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in law, public policy, environment, development studies or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Authorization to work in the DRC (nationality, residence, work permit or short‑term visa).
• Minimum four years of professional experience in DRC mining governance, policy, ESG management or sustainable development.

Required skills

• Strong research and analytical skills, including legal and policy analysis.
• Experience conducting stakeholder interviews and field research.
• Excellent written English, with ability to produce professional reports and APA‑style citations.
