Health Specialist – Community Based Surveillance (6‑month contract)

About the role

The Health Specialist will support UNICEF’s response to the 2026 Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo by strengthening community‑based surveillance in Bunia and surrounding provinces. This six‑month temporary appointment focuses on early detection, reporting and follow‑up of suspected cases to protect children and vulnerable populations.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and monitor community‑based surveillance activities to ensure timely identification of Ebola suspects.
• Coordinate with national health authorities, local health facilities and community volunteers for case reporting and verification.
• Provide technical guidance on infection‑prevention measures and continuity of essential health services.
• Collect, analyse and disseminate surveillance data to inform rapid response actions.
• Facilitate community engagement and risk communication to promote appropriate health‑seeking behaviours.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Public Health, Medicine or a related field.
• Minimum five years of professional experience in community surveillance or public‑health programmes, preferably in emergency or outbreak settings.
• Demonstrated ability to work in insecure, resource‑limited environments and to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills, with attention to detail.
