Senior Superintendent - Underground Mine Training

About the role

The Senior Superintendent will lead the design, implementation and continuous improvement of the technical training framework for KCC's underground mining operations in Kolwezi. Reporting to the Technical Training Manager, the incumbent will ensure all staff and contractors hold the required qualifications and clearances to work safely.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and align the underground training strategy with operational priorities, including annual planning and emerging technology integration.
• Conduct in‑depth training needs analyses and create role‑based competency matrices with clear progression paths.
• Oversee hands‑on delivery of training across mining, drilling, blasting, mobile machine operation, support management, ventilation and emergency response.
• Identify critical skill gaps, design accelerated training routes and support localisation, apprenticeship and graduate programmes.
• Implement rigorous competency verification, issue operational authorisations and maintain auditable records.
• Lead, coach and develop the training team, ensuring technical credibility and succession planning.
• Embed HSE policies, analyse incidents and ensure compliance with DRC mining legislation.
• Define and monitor KPIs such as time‑to‑competency and assessment pass rates to drive continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external OEMs or training providers to align learning standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, engineering, training sciences or a related field; certifications in Training or Competency‑Based Training are a plus.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in mining, with extensive hands‑on underground exposure.
• Proven track record in technical training, skills development and managing trainer teams.
• Experience in large‑scale, multicultural mining operations; bilingual French/English is advantageous.

Required skills

• Stoping and underground support operations expertise.
• Training Needs Analysis (TNA) and competency‑based pedagogy.
• Design of competency matrices, learning paths and VOC verification systems.
• Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and KPI development.
• Strong knowledge of underground safety standards, risk management and regulatory compliance.
