Conservation Pilot – Okapi Wildlife Reserve

About the role

The Conservation Pilot will support protected‑area managers in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve by conducting surveillance, monitoring and logistical flights. Working under the Field Operations Manager and WCS Aviation Fleet Manager, the pilot will operate aircraft safely, maintain flight records and oversee aviation activities for the WCS Democratic Republic of Congo programme.

Key responsibilities

• Act as Pilot‑in‑Command for all surveillance, monitoring and logistical flights supporting park operations and anti‑poaching activities.
• Ensure compliance with all national and international aviation regulations, keeping aircraft documents current and complete.
• Maintain detailed flight logs including location, passengers, purpose and duration.
• Oversee aircraft upkeep, cleaning, security and routine maintenance in line with prescribed plans.
• Train and supervise staff involved in aviation operations, including observers and assistants.
• Coordinate with national logistical teams and occasional travel to Uganda and international locations as required.

Required profile

• Qualified pilot with experience as Pilot‑in‑Command for fixed‑wing or rotary‑wing aircraft.
• Demonstrated ability to follow strict safety procedures and aviation regulations.
• Willingness to work in remote field conditions and travel within the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries.
• Experience managing small teams of field assistants or observers.
