Director – Okapi Wildlife Reserve (DRC)

About the role

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is seeking an experienced leader to serve as Director of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve (OWR) in Epulu, Democratic Republic of Congo. The Director will guide the Reserve Management Unit (RMU) through the next phase of a 10‑year management agreement, ensuring the protection of iconic species and the well‑being of local communities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for all reserve activities, including ranger deployment, wildlife protection, and anti‑poaching efforts.
• Oversee community liaison, research programs, tourism development, fundraising, communications, monitoring & evaluation, and capacity‑building of national staff.
• Manage a budget of significant size, ensuring financial accountability and efficient day‑to‑day operations.
• Maintain strong relationships with government partners, state enforcement agencies, and other NGOs.
• Lead a multidisciplinary team of roughly 300 staff across six departments.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in large‑scale conservation or protected‑area management.
• Demonstrated ability to operate in challenging, insecure environments.
• Excellent communication, diplomatic, and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Strong track record of managing complex budgets and large teams.
