Environment Health Safety Lead

About the role

An international engineering firm is looking for an experienced Lead Environmental Expert to guide environmental planning and compliance for major building construction projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The role involves ensuring that all project activities meet local regulations, international standards and sustainability best practices.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, review and implement Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) for building and infrastructure projects.
• Ensure compliance with DRC environmental legislation, international standards and client requirements.
• Develop and monitor Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) throughout the project lifecycle.
• Provide environmental guidance during design and construction supervision phases.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, government authorities, contractors and stakeholders on environmental matters.
• Monitor environmental performance, identify risks and recommend mitigation measures.
• Prepare environmental reports and support project audits and compliance reviews.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Ecology or a related discipline (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum 8 years of professional experience in environmental assessment and management.
• Registered and licensed as an Environmental Expert with the competent national authority in the DRC.
• In‑depth knowledge of DRC EIA legislation and international environmental and social safeguard standards.
• Proven experience conducting ESIAs for real‑estate, building or infrastructure projects.
• Fluency in English; French highly desirable.
