Senior Climate Screening & E&S Safeguards Expert

About the role

The Senior Climate Screening & E&S Safeguards Expert will support NTU International’s EU‑funded technical assistance to ECOWAS, helping integrate climate resilience, environmental sustainability and social inclusion into regional transport infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct climate screening and resilience assessments for transport corridors and infrastructure initiatives.
• Provide technical advice on environmental and social safeguards in line with EU and international standards.
• Prepare and review environmental and social impact assessments, climate risk analyses and resilience studies.
• Integrate climate adaptation, gender equality, disability inclusion and other social safeguards into project preparation and implementation.
• Develop and review ESIAs, ESMPs, resettlement frameworks, stakeholder engagement plans and related safeguard documentation.
• Advise ECOWAS institutions and national stakeholders on safeguard compliance and climate mainstreaming.
• Design safeguard procedures, methodologies and technical guidance.
• Deliver capacity‑building workshops and technical training on climate screening and E&S safeguards.
• Support monitoring, reporting and quality assurance of safeguard‑related activities.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in environmental sciences, climate change, sustainability or a related field.
• Minimum 10 years of professional experience in environmental and social safeguards, climate resilience or sustainable infrastructure development.
• Proven experience on infrastructure or transport projects in developing countries, preferably in Sub‑Saharan Africa.
• Experience with international development cooperation and donor‑funded programmes.
