Experimental Aerodynamics PhD – Flow Measurement & Visualization

About the role

The Aerodynamics group seeks two PhD candidates to advance experimental techniques for aerodynamic flow measurement. The research focuses on transforming flow field data into aerodynamic forces using pressure and friction measurements, and on extending large‑scale 3D particle tracking and helium‑filled soap bubble tracers to high‑speed regimes.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and validate advanced non‑intrusive measurement methods such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), Infrared Thermography and Background Oriented Schlieren.
• Design and conduct experiments in low‑speed and high‑speed wind tunnels, including supersonic and hypersonic facilities.
• Integrate measurement theory with flow modelling for industrial wind‑tunnel applications.
• Analyse large datasets using statistical techniques and image‑processing pipelines.
• Collaborate with European partners (ESA, DNW, LaVision, Formula 1 team) and contribute to scientific publications.

Required profile

• Engineering degree (aerospace or mechanical preferred).
• Strong motivation for experimental aerodynamics research.
• Willingness to learn on the job and work in a multidisciplinary team.
