Head of Department – Health Safety & Environment

About the role

Under the direct supervision of the Managing Director, the Head of Department – Health Safety & Environment will define, drive and implement the HSE strategy for Kamoto Copper’s copper and cobalt mining site. The role ensures major risk governance, legal compliance and operational excellence of HSE systems, fostering a strong safety culture and responsible environmental management while supporting continuous improvement of sustainability performance.

Key responsibilities

• Define and deploy the site’s HSE strategy aligned with Group requirements, including biodiversity, water management, emissions, decarbonisation and performance tracking.
• Establish and maintain a robust material risk management system using HAZOP, ICAM and other methodologies to identify major hazards and critical controls.
• Ensure compliance with national legislation and international standards (ICMM, IFC, Copper Mark) through inspections, audits and procedure updates.
• Develop visible leadership initiatives to strengthen safety culture, managerial accountability and supervision of high‑risk activities.
• Supervise incident reporting, investigations, root‑cause analysis and corrective‑action implementation.
• Lead emergency preparedness, response plan testing and crisis management to enhance organisational resilience.
• Support operational managers by integrating HSE systems into daily work, coaching leaders and delivering targeted training.
• Leverage digital tools and leading indicators to analyse HSE data, produce management reports and guide strategic decisions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or National Higher Diploma in Health, Safety & Environment, Risk Management or equivalent.
• 10‑15 years of HSE leadership experience, with at least 7 years in mining and mineral processing.
• Proven track record in major risk management, high‑risk environments, underground mining and emergency management.
• Strong strategic leadership, collaboration and proactive communication skills.
