Project Manager: Substations

About the role

WSP Africa is looking for an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of complex transmission and distribution substation projects across South Africa and other African and international markets. The role involves managing multidisciplinary engineering teams through all design and delivery phases.

Key responsibilities

• Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams on substation projects up to 400kV AC (including low‑voltage AC/DC systems).
• Support preparation of conceptual and functional designs, specifications, bills of quantity and tender documents for projects from 11kV to 400kV.
• Manage project schedules, budgets, resources and delivery programmes to ensure safe, on‑time, on‑budget completion.
• Ensure engineering deliverables comply with IEC, IEEE, SANS and client‑specific standards.
• Coordinate activities with clients, contractors, stakeholders and internal disciplines.
• Lead project meetings, prepare minutes and provide clear progress updates.
• Prepare comprehensive project reports, cost estimates and budgets.
• Contribute to proposals by preparing and reviewing scope, methodology, schedules and budgets.

Required profile

• Degree in Electrical Engineering from an internationally recognised institution.
• 15+ years’ experience in transmission and distribution, with substantial experience delivering substation projects.
• Proven experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams on complex substation projects up to 400kV AC.
• Strong knowledge of IEC, IEEE and SANS standards and client‑specific requirements.
