Senior Core Network Project & Design Engineer

About the role
The Senior Core Network Project & Design Engineer is responsible for the end‑to‑end lifecycle of Vodacom's packet core platforms, including planning, design, deployment, operation, and quality assurance. The role ensures seamless national and international roaming, budget compliance, and vendor coordination.
Key responsibilities
- Design and document technical solutions for PS, IMS, PCRF, CSDB, NTP and related core network nodes.
- Provide third‑line support to operations for 3GPP packet‑core issues.
- Prepare, plan and execute the core network budget, manage purchase orders and supplier documentation.
- Oversee vendor projects, SLA compliance, equipment capacity monitoring, and end‑of‑life/equipment‑obsolescence planning.
- Support billing, corporate APN/PBX integration and third‑party product integration.
- Monitor and configure roaming, data and voice services for 2G/3G/4G partners.
- Maintain SIP‑based telephony platforms, soft switches and IP‑PBX systems.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in IT, Engineering or related field.
- At least 8 years of experience in a telecom environment.
- Proven hands‑on experience with GSM, EWSD, SSS network databases.
- Strong understanding of mobile core architectures (MME, SGSN, SGW, GGSN, PGW, PCC, PCRF, OCS) and IPv4/IPv6.
Required skills
- IP networking and 3GPP packet‑core systems.
- Protocols: TCP/IP, PPP, IPSec, OSPF, BGP, GTP, CAP, RADIUS, RANAP, DIAMETER, DNS, QoS.
- LTE, UMTS, GSM/GPRS call flows and network topology.
- Protocol testing for UMTS/LTE and end‑to‑end system testing.
