Director of Okapi Wildlife Reserve (DRC)

About the role

The Wildlife Conservation Society is seeking an experienced leader to serve as Director of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Based permanently on‑site in Epulu, the Director will guide the Reserve Management Unit through the next phase of its 10‑year management agreement, ensuring the protection of iconic species and the well‑being of local communities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Reserve, overseeing all day‑to‑day activities.
• Manage a staff of approximately 300 across six departments, including ranger deployment, wildlife protection, community liaison, research, tourism development, fundraising, reporting, communications, monitoring & evaluation, and capacity building.
• Maintain strong relationships with government partners, state enforcement agencies, and other stakeholder organizations.
• Oversee a significant budget, ensuring efficient program operations and financial accountability.
• Lead efforts to safeguard forest elephants, okapi, and eastern chimpanzee populations while supporting sustainable livelihoods for indigenous Mbuti and Efé peoples.

Required profile

• Extensive senior‑level management experience in large, complex conservation or natural‑resource projects.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in challenging and insecure environments.
• Strong diplomatic, communication, and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Demonstrated experience with budget oversight and operational responsibility.
