PhD Position in Experimental Aerodynamics

About the role

We are seeking a PhD candidate to join our Aerodynamics group and develop experimental techniques that convert flow‑field measurements into aerodynamic forces. The research focuses on advanced flow‑visualisation methods, including large‑scale 3D particle tracking and the use of helium‑filled soap bubbles as tracers up to supersonic speeds.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement non‑intrusive measurement techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Background Oriented Schlieren.
• Develop and validate large‑scale 3D particle‑tracking algorithms in collaboration with flow modelling.
• Conduct experiments in low‑speed and high‑speed wind tunnels, including supersonic and hypersonic facilities.
• Collaborate with European partners (ESA, DNW, LaVision, Formula 1 team) on joint research projects.
• Publish scientific results in peer‑reviewed journals and present findings at conferences.

Required profile

• PhD (or candidate) in aerospace/mechanical engineering, applied physics or a related field.
• Demonstrated research experience in experimental fluid mechanics.
• Proven competence with flow‑measurement techniques, especially PIV.
