Superintendent – Shovel Fleet

About the role

The Superintendent – Shovel Fleet leads the maintenance of the surface mining excavator fleet, ensuring availability, reliability and optimal utilization to meet production targets. Reporting to the Manager – HME Maintenance, the role drives preventive, predictive and condition‑based maintenance strategies while complying with technical standards, OEM recommendations and safety requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure safety and manage risks associated with excavator maintenance, including stored energy, lifting, electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Define and execute maintenance plans aligned with production needs, asset availability targets and OEM guidance.
• Oversee preventive, predictive and condition‑based maintenance, planned shutdowns, major inspections, component replacements and rebuilds.
• Monitor fleet performance metrics (availability, MTBF, MTTR, downtime) and address recurring failures.
• Lead root‑cause investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Supervise critical excavator systems (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural, propulsion, lifting, swing, control, lubrication) and ensure structural integrity.
• Manage parts, tools, consumables, facilities and specialized resources required for safe and efficient maintenance.
• Prepare and monitor maintenance budget, analyse cost per operating hour and identify optimisation opportunities.
• Coach and develop multidisciplinary maintenance teams, set KPIs and promote a safety‑focused culture.
• Coordinate with Mining Operations, Planning & Reliability, Technical Services, Supply Chain and OEMs to align maintenance windows with production schedules.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Heavy Equipment Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in mine or heavy‑industrial maintenance.
• At least 5 years in a maintenance leadership role.
• Proven experience maintaining large surface mining shovels from manufacturers such as Komatsu, P&H, Caterpillar or Hitachi.
• Experience with high‑capacity electric and/or hydraulic excavators.
• Strong background in planning, budgeting, cost control and asset performance management.
