Director, Okapi Wildlife Reserve

About the role

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is seeking an experienced leader to serve as Director of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve (OWR) in Epulu, DRC. Reporting to the WCS DRC Country Director and overseen by the OWR Steering Committee, the Director will guide the Reserve through the next phase of its 10‑year management agreement.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for all reserve activities.
• Oversee ranger deployment, wildlife protection, and anti‑poaching efforts.
• Manage community liaison, research programs, tourism development, and fundraising initiatives.
• Lead communications, monitoring & evaluation, and capacity‑building for national staff.
• Supervise staff recruitment, development, and performance management.
• Maintain strong relationships with government partners, enforcement agencies, and NGOs.
• Administer a significant budget and ensure efficient day‑to‑day operations.

Required profile

• Extensive experience managing large protected areas or conservation programs.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in challenging environments.
• Strong track record in stakeholder engagement, fundraising, and reporting.
• Demonstrated competence in budget oversight and operational planning.
