Mechanical Engineer – HVAC Specialist

About the role

WSP is expanding its Mechanical services team and seeks a Mechanical Engineer with a strong focus on HVAC design. The role involves delivering high‑quality building services solutions for a variety of projects, from inception through to close‑out, while supporting senior engineers on complex assignments.

Key responsibilities

• Lead HVAC design, including heat‑load and ventilation calculations, adhering to local and international standards.
• Produce detailed design documentation using software such as HAP, Loadest, IES, AutoCAD, Revit and BIM360.
• Specify and approve specialist mechanical equipment.
• Develop tender packages, Bills of Quantities and manage the tender process.
• Oversee contractor performance and contract administration within the mechanical discipline.
• Maintain client relationships, understand their needs and provide tailored solutions.
• Manage project scope, schedule and cost to ensure delivery within agreed constraints.

Required profile

• B.Eng., B.Sc. Eng. or B.Tech. Eng. degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in building services consulting, primarily HVAC.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead small project teams.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a focus on engineering rigor.

Required skills

• HVAC design and heat‑load/ventilation calculations.
• Proficiency with HAP, Loadest and IES software.
• Experience using AutoCAD, Revit and BIM360 for modelling.
• Manual psychrometric analysis and equipment specification.
• Knowledge of South African National Standards (SANS) and familiarity with British Standards and ASHRAE.
• Preparation of tender documentation and Bills of Quantities.
• Contractor and contract management within mechanical projects.
