Staff Counsellor – Ebola Response (DRC)

About the role

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) seeks a Staff Counsellor to provide psychological and counselling support to its personnel engaged in the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Working under the supervision of the Chief of Mission and in coordination with regional and headquarters staff welfare units, the counsellor will help mitigate stress and fatigue among field staff.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver individual and group counselling services to staff involved in the Ebola emergency.
• Conduct psychosocial risk assessments and propose mitigation measures.
• Develop a psychosocial emergency response plan tailored to the mission.
• Advise the Chief of Mission and stakeholders on implementing UN Mental Health Strategy and IOM People Strategy.
• Coordinate staff welfare responses during emergencies and critical incidents.
• Integrate psychosocial considerations into security and emergency plans.
• Design and deliver training on mental health and resilience for all staff.

Required profile

• Relevant professional background in psychology, counselling, or mental health.
• Experience providing support in high‑stress, humanitarian or health‑crisis environments.
• Ability to work under supervision of senior mission leadership and collaborate with regional and headquarters units.

Required skills

• Psychosocial risk assessment methodology.
• Development of emergency response and training materials.
• Strong interpersonal communication for counselling and training delivery.
