Senior Legal Counsel (New Markets)

About the role

Wave is building the first cashless continent in Africa and needs a senior legal professional to guide its expansion into the Democratic Republic of Congo and other new markets. As Senior Legal Counsel you will be the primary legal advisor, ensuring that growth initiatives comply with local regulations while protecting the company’s commercial interests.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate contracts for core products and services, including agent, payment and procurement agreements.
• Lead complex, high‑value contract negotiations and continuously improve the contracting process across multiple countries.
• Implement and update group legal policies, such as contracts and data‑privacy policies, based on practical experience and regulatory changes.
• Manage litigation procedures, including pre‑action case management, mediation, arbitration and court proceedings.
• Provide legal support for employment matters, disciplinary actions and terminations.
• Oversee company secretarial duties for all legal entities.
• Collaborate with Risk and Controls teams to mitigate legal risks.
• Develop and execute data‑privacy and consumer‑protection compliance strategies.

Required profile

• Minimum 7‑10 years of experience as a qualified lawyer, preferably with a focus on fintech or financial services.
• Proven track record in contract drafting, negotiation and management in multiple jurisdictions.
• Experience handling litigation, arbitration and regulatory compliance.
• Strong understanding of corporate, employment, data‑privacy and consumer‑protection law in emerging markets.
